Chkdsk doesn't--on reboot, the message "To skip disk check press any key..." countdown stops at 1
Title pretty much says it all.I cannot run a chkdsk on the system volume because one reboot, the countdown stops and hangs at 1 and never continues into chkdsk.Windows 7 rtm, all current updates.

To clear the NTFS dirty bit on a drive/partition, try this. Note x: is the drive you want to clear, usually c:Click on Start then Run, type cmd and press Enter. Next type fsutil dirty query x:. This queries the drive, and more than likely it will tell you that it is dirty. Next, type chkntfs /x x:. The /X tells Windows to NOT check that particular drive on the next reboot. Now manually reboot your computer, it should not do a chkdsk and should take you directly to normal Windows login.Once Windows has fully loaded, bring up another Command Prompt and enter chkdsk x: /f /r. Reply Y if asked if you want this to happen on the next boot. This should take you through 5 stages of the chkdsk scan on the next boot and will unset that dirty bit. Be patient as this can take an hour or more depending on the size of the harddriveor partition.Once booted back to Windows, open another Command Prompt and query the dirty bit again by entering fsutil dirty query x: and Windows will confirm that the dirty bit is not set on that drive

Hey, I have this problem, but it occurs at startup. When I turn my computer on it immediately starts chkdsk and it stops at 1. The other thing is that I can't stop it, even if I start pressing keys or clicking on the mouse. Now I can't access Windows 7, I'm typing this on ASUS Splashtop.

I have the same problem. Win7 x64. If I initiate chkdsk at next boot, the countdown stops at 1 and waits indefinitely. I have to kill the power and interrupt the chkdsk to be able to boot up again. I have checked for corrupted files, and found none. The SYSTEM drive is NOT dirty. I'm a bit at a loss here as to what to try next. Never seen this problem before either. Regards Triple

Same problem is here (Win7 x64 Enterprise). Since it's a system disk, I'm forced to check it at boot time, but it doesn't do. Stops at the "1 seccond(s)" stage and hangs. Still looking for a solution....

Holy ____. I had just written this off as never gonna fix this problem and thought it was just a problem with this drive. A couple days ago, I got a new larger, faster drive so put it in the laptop and reinstalled Windows 7 and---same problem. I vaguely recalled posting this but no one ever answered it so I had quite coming back, but thought I would dig up the old thread and see if anyone else ever saw the problem. What a surprise to see that not only did others see it, but there was actually a hot fix!The hotfix solved the problem! Thank you!

I agree with holy ****!! I too had the same excruciating problem after upgrading vista ultimate 64 bit to 7. And after extensive Internet searching stump led upon this posting. Thank you so much!
